Broken: Dark Horse Saloon restroom signs
Paul Schreiber points out a photo found on Buzz Andersen's Flickr photostream:
These gender restroom indications at the Dark Horse Saloon in Boulder, Colorado are very confusing.
It would be interesting to find out how many people walk into the wrong bathroom.
It's broken but it's *benign broken*. No one has ever gone into the wrong bathroom. Many people have taken one-eighth of a second longer to decide than they might have done without the dopey arrows. It actually belongs to a category of *informal*, *vernacular*, *undesigned* communication that does no harm at all and that we'd miss if it went away.
Oh, I know what to do! Either:
1. Change the hinges to opposite sides of the door
(from[door][hinge] to
[hinge][door])
2. Repaint the door, mirroring it (the hand faces the other way for each door.
I say not broken. There is a man's leg on the door with the man hand, and a womans leg on the opposite door. This would clarify which door is which quite effectively.
It's not broken, it's intentional. I've seen the same thing at other bars. It's supposed to be funny. If someone accidentally goes into the wrong restroom, everyone gets a good laugh at their expense.
If you've ever raced trikes at the horse, you'll know this isn't broken. It's art. And it's not benign broken, I have met a trike race who hasn't ventured into the wrong bathroom
I have been there, and I walked into the wrong one! The one on the left is the mens and the right is womens, I found out that the hard way...
