Broken: No dumping sign
Eric Greiner submits a picture taken in Seattle, Washington:
There are two broken things going on here.
1. The signs states "Dump No Material. Whatever."
(I know it's a misprint, it should say "Dump no material whatsoever" but it is funny).
2. The fact that there is a big pile dumped (obviously it was dumped by park services) right in front of the sign adds to the irony.
haha..
it looks like some junior high girls saying "oh..whatever!" haha..
I teach junior high music..and yes..my students does that..a lot! lol
second!
That's funny. I can't QUITE read the sign above it, but it looks like it says "High car prowl area." What does THAT mean?!
There's that big pile of stuff there to stop the car prowling. The prowlers just can't stop thinking about the irony. Therefore, they can't prowl.=D
Irony is not brokenness.
(And landscaping materials in use by the parks department are not "dumping" in the legal sense, so it's not broken literally either, regarding that.)
Also, there are no periods on the sign, so it's "Dump no material whatever", not the much-more-broken-but-not-actually-on-the-damn-sign version in the writeup.
"Whatever" in this use looks awkward but is not incorrect (see Dictionary.com's definition, sense 9.)
If the material has to be misrepresented to look broken, the broken thing is the story, not the material.
I think the sign above it says High Car Patrol Area... Not entirely sure what that means either though..
I live in seattle. The upper sign says High Car Prowl Area, meaning this picture was probably taken at a city park, like Discovery (or any of the smaller ones) It means that alot of cars get broken into, but since they posted a sign, it's not the city's fault.
I go for a walk daily with my wife and we pass at least two "Dump no material whatever" signs. IT's a very standard sign here, and it annoys both of us every time we see it.
