Broken: Cuyama town info sign
Ernie Glenesk submits a picture taken in Cuyama, California:
What is the total trying to describe exactly?
Not Broken!
Sarcastic maybe, or childish, but not broken.
The extra number doesn't produce confusion (or at least not in a way that could endanger your life (except if thinking too hard about it makes you loose control of your car)) and actually makes you think about the purpose of these signs.
Not broken! this is actually part of the city intranational value categorical index or CIVC. It informs travelers of the potential......
ok, you're right. i got nothing.
The sign does have a valid issue - the numerals don't line up. Proportional spacing is inappropriate for numbers lined up vertically like that.
Funny sign, though.
I was gonna exclaim 'Not Broken!' just because there always seems to be someone here who gets a strange satisfaction out of being contrarian, but I see I'm too late :(
It's hard to find out why someone did this. My theory: Someone was running Windows Excel and forgot to remove the TOTAL...
Or someone loved math alot...
Or they just wanted people to have a laugh (and get posted on TIB)...
I choose the third one.
hey, I've seen this sign many times before and I can tell u that it was photo shopped! though it is funny...
oriansbelt--You mean that its not photoshopped...I've seen driven by it many times too, almost took a picture last time to send to TIB but decided against it... I can tell you all that that is really how the sign looks. Its right next to the one gas station right off the side of the road
I figured out the sign.
It clearly means that 46.63 of the population is established so many feet above sea level.
Yes, it is broken. Those who post "Not broken" might want to watch Seth Godin's talk from Gel:2006. Available for free at google video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4101280286098310645
Quote from that talk: "[...]and that's the incredible stupidity of the comments section of thisisbroken[.com], which is that no matter how broken something is someone will post a note saying 'I don't think it's broken, and here's why...'[...]"
(The reason this sign is broken, btw, is Seth's reason #7: broken on purpose, to attract the attention of sommeone.)
This is indeed broken-
The sign is in "New Cuyama", not "Cuyama"... I'm surprised nobody picked that up!

Heh, that's great. It's cool to see a good sense of humor pop up now and then.
Obviously, this town is run by one too many math teachers.
lol
