Broken: PC Richard slogan
Here in New York there's a chain of stores, PC Richard, that sells appliances and electronics. My one experience with them wasn't very good - see this column - and that seems to be consistent with what I've heard from friends and colleagues. But that's not the point of this post.
Instead, I'd like to point out what I saw when I walked by the store recently: the slogan that is repeatedly printed on about a dozen awnings outside the store. Each one reads...
Richard IS reliable
...with "is" underlined for emphasis.
The slogan comes across as defensive. "We are reliable, we are we are, you've gotta believe us!" they seem to be saying.
Methinks they doth protest too much :)
I promise he is! Crazy Richard is Insane Selling used and broken electronics. 75% off broken 8-Track Players! lol

Despite what you think of their customer service abilities, the sign is NOT borken, it's a metaphor. They are trying to equate thier name with reliability.
This reminds me in a way of the WEAC (Wisconsin Education Association Council) mission statement: "Every Kid Deserves a Great School" with "Kid" being underlined. http://www.weac.org/AboutWEA/mission.htm
Wouldn't it make more sense to emphasize "Great" instead of "Kid?" Here at WEAC, we don't care about the teens or adults, just kids!
There is a sign on a church here that says "Jesus IS Christ" with the "is" in bold italics. I've never really understood what that is trying to say.
The first picture is a nice photo of a late model Subaru wagon stuck in nasty trafic, the second photo SMALLER than the thumbnail. (click on it and you get a SMALLER version) so this post ARE broken, it are, it are. This are broken dot com. "We is the world". Anyone see the latest Pirates movie? It's rated 'IS'!
In bizarro-world up is down, left is right, is are are. I'm so confus-ed.
I think they just don't want anybody to think they're unreliable, when it's doing just the opposite!
BROKEN!

The first thing I thought of is that IS = Information Systems, so maybe they are targeting all those IS departments out there shopping for computer equipment?
I also kind of agree with Danimal, but if that were the case you would think it would be "PC Richard IS Reliability"
-Randolino
Being reliable isn't necessarily a good thing. Our government is reliable. You can rely on it to screw up everything, every time.
