Broken: Bathroom stall directions
Eileen George submits a picture taken in Virginia:
This picture was taken in the inside of a bathroom stall at a Virginia rest stop.
The sign on the inside of the stall door says "Do not use hook to hang your purse. Place purse here" but there is a hook right under "Place purse here," which is the only thing you could place your purse on.
Where else besides on the hook am I supposed to place my purse?
The old hook has been removed. You can see the holes for it in the upper right corner of the image.
If your purse was hanging there near the top of the door, one could reach over and grab it while you in no position to run after them.
The new hook described in the sign, is low enough from the top edge of the door to prevent grab and run theft of valuables.
The other (missing) hook could still be used for a coat I guess, though that could be stolen just as easy.
The sign seems unneccessary if the solution was to remove the upper hook, and add the lower hook.
did you check to see if the sign is coated in an adhesive. honestly people think before you assume something is broken,
Is it my imagination, or have I already seen this? I think someone posted it about a year or so ago. It's just as good the second time.
I read once somewhere that you're best off placing your briefcase/purse on the ground between your feet as you do your business in a stall. Whoever came up with this piece of advice has clearly never been to a public restroom, though.
In anycase, that sign should really be taken down, since the hook no longer exists, but being that it's a public restroom, I could very easily believe that the missing hook in the top corner is more an act of vandilism than an intential removal by whomever runs this facility.
After all, if you place your purse there, where do you place your jacket?
Three thoughts:
1. I agree with the idea that the sign refers to an old hook, which has been taken off.
2. Why has this been posted under Food and Drink instead of Signs?
3. This is nearly identical to the June 26, 2003 post, down to the holes in the top of the door. In fact, I think it may even be the same bathroom, but the sign has been changed (this post calls it a Virginia rest stop and the other calls it "a rest stop between Washington, DC and Raleigh, NC" -- it could be the same place). Maybe this post should be removed or a link should be put up to the other one.
here is the 2003 post

A little different in that it has 2 seperate signs, which comparing the 2 if I had to pick either as broken I would choose this 1 and not the other, but I call them both not broken..Missing hook was probaly a metal hook and the plastic clips are not commonly referred to as hooks.. the 2003 post also has signs that are obviously attached with rivets and not the apparently adhesive sign of this 1..
Looks like they removed the upper hook that the sign says not to use. So when they took the hook out, they could have removed the sign as well.
Personally I like the stalls that have a small shelf that pulls down for your purse to sit on while you hover over a questionable toilet seat. Mostly for myself I just hang my purse around my neck. The sign should have said something about just using the hook provided if the old hook had already been removed.
Just as broken as the one I'm sure I've seen before. Just as broken is the fact that this is posted under "Food and Drink".
im a guy, i dont have to worry about this stuff
and ilya, read that post up above. same place (probably) 2 years ago
the old one isnt the same place. look at the placement of the removed hook on the old one. riiight up on the top, no room for anything.
on this one, it's got enough room for the imprint of the old hook, an imprint which ISNT on the old pic
also, where are the screw marks from those two signs on the old one that's screwed in?
I don't know if this is the same situation but for ahwile a few public restrooms had these signs because they would take down the hooks and the theives would come in and put them back up since it makes it so easy to steal the purses and they know the woman is going to be in a position to where she can't chase after them right away.
I haven't heard about it in a few years but maybe they have that problem there.
Arizonagirl's explanation makes sense.
Another explanation could be that they removed the hook but the sign had been too well glued to the door, and they couldn't remove it without destroying the door.
This post is under food and drink because it is a restaurant's washroom.
Don't rest stops usually have a restaurant or at least a fast food counter? Or is there a big difference between a rest stop and a truck stop?
ROFL I think the sign wasn't cut at the right place. It should read (in two pieces):
_____________________________
CAUTION
DO NOT USE HOOK PROVIDED,
IT IS USED FOR HANGING
CHEAP JACKETS,
AND NOT VALUABLES.

PLACE PURSE HERE

I agree with Fuzzy on this one. Open it so it's like a tiny platform, then put your Barbie toy purse on it. Oh, and make sure Ken is watching it.
Hey, this was posted previously, in June 2003!

'This is Broken' is broken :P
actualy, if you looke, the hook is in the top right corner, making it esy for a thief to grab the purse. what is under the sign is out of reach of the thief
