Broken: Bank doors

BankdoorsMichael Champlin submits a picture taken in Derby, Kansas:

We have a branch of the Boeing Wichita Credit Union here in Derby, Kansas, and they just put in these new security doors.

Whenever I walk in, I find myself wondering, “Am I going in, or out?” These new doors certainly don’t help.

PUSH TO EXIT THE REAL WORLD

Second! So close...

Definatly broken

Posted by: Tyler at June 13, 2006 03:16 AM

And here I thought you were gonna break into the vault...

Posted by: VNet at June 13, 2006 03:34 AM

They are adding these to some branches of my back and they're broken for another reason. They make it really hard to get in or out of the branch. The first door has to close completely before the second door will open. If you forget about this delay and try to open the second door it's like running your hand into a wall. Second problem is getting out of the bank. Same problem, only I wonder what will happen if there's an emergency that necessitates people leaving quickly? The system will trap them inside the building as both doors can't be open at the same time. I'm surprised the fire marshalls allow this system to operate.

Oh, I should also mention that if someone does hold up the back with a gun you surely want them to be frustrated in trying to exit the bank quickly. Much better to have them temporarilly trapped with a gun in their hand.

Gee ... I can't seem to type "bank" today.

"Gee ... I can't seem to type "bank" today."

Broken! :-)

Hopefully the glass is bulletproof. I presume that this system is so that if a teller sees someone with a gun they can prevent them from entering the bank, or at least from leaving it. The idea being to trap them between the two doors on the way in or out.

Every security system I have seen which locks doors has an emergency unlock in case of fire to permit evacuation.

I have to admit that I don't know if they do the same thing in banks, as I am not familiar with their security systems.

Best to just stand there awkwardly until someone else comes along and lets you in. That's how I got through high school.

"I wonder what will happen if there's an emergency that necessitates people leaving quickly? ... I'm surprised the fire marshalls allow this system to operate."

As with all electronically-controlled doors, the moment the fire alarm goes off, the system is deactivated, and the doors will open freely.

Dave Collins says: "As with all electronically-controlled doors, the moment the fire alarm goes off, the system is deactivated, and the doors will open freely."

You hope.

As far as the signs go, you're exiting one area and entering another. Simple enough.

Silly but really broken in the sense that an inattentive or unsuspecting user will experience confusion? I wonder.

I have to say the level of discussion here tody is pretty interesting;

Dave C. you make a good point; but just to play devils advocate; what happens if the burglars trip the fire alarm to free up the doors?- I think that its trying to solve a problem w/out taking into effect all possible user scenarios-

Broken; if only for the signage aspect; but totally broke-ass door system!

Another example of a company trying to save money in lieu of good customer service. Instead of hiring a competent security guard, they put these doors that the average bank customer who visits at most maybe once a week is not going to understand.

This is also broken for people who can't go through one at a time. For example, if I had a little kid with me, I would wonder if they were an exception to "one person at a time" or not - I wouldn't want to leave them outside while I went in (or vice versa), and I would be afraid if we *both* went in together, that an alarm would go off or something.

I think they want you to do the following:

Open the door to exit...

Open the door to enter...

Then realize that the door only lets you EXIT the bank and ENTER the rest of the world!

ROFL!!!

If you cannot tell if you are going into a building or out of one, well, just tell me what you are smoking, and where you got it. And by the way, all public buildings doors PUSH to the EXIT, and you PULL to get INSIDE. So you got that to help. I don't know why they bother with a sign on the door anyway- unless there are 2 doors one strictly to enter, one strictly to exit. The poster did not mention that.

Hm... "Whenever I walk in, I find myself wondering, “Am I going in, or out?”" ...well no wonder - you're from Kentucky. Just ease off when you're drinking that moonshine. ..yeah, I know not funny but right now im...eh... who cares

Not true.. I've been to quite a few Public buildings that have you push to enter and pull to exit.... Convenience stores come to mind right off the top of my head...

Posted by: Ben at June 14, 2006 04:25 PM

Yes, alot of convenience stores here is push to open and pull to exit also. I have noticed a type of electric lock also. It looks like if they detect theft, they hit a button, doors won't open.
