Broken: QuickTime error
No saying this isn't broekn. Despite the dialog displaying the problem clearly, it still makes no sense.
Another broken thing about QuickTime is the stupid pop-up window that appears every time I use the program. It begs me to upgrade to QuickTime Pro. I will never "Go Pro," as the ad puts it, because I almost never use it.
Now Greg has given me another reason to click on the forver demaning ad's "Later" button. :>)
But I like that! It's like a mean girl who says, "Later!" I can hear it in my head when I click on that button! LOL
I think I've found a new all-time favorite Windows error message with that one...:-)
Dunno if this still works in newer versions of Quicktime, but in previous versions, QT would only fly that "Upgrade" banner the first time each calendar day that Quicktime Player started up; if you set the system date several years into the future, then opened QT Player, then quit and reset the system date, it would make the banner go away.
_@_v - there's a way around having to suffer that "go pro" splash screen.
_@_v - before opening a quicktime file set your date to like 5 years in the future - open the file, shoo away the splash screen and close the file.
_@_v - set the date back to today and you won't hafta deal with that quicktime thingie for another 5 years.
_@_v - snail 1 - quicktime 0
_@_v - sorta like what the guy above me posted whilst i was tappin' away at keyboard....
_@_v - what can i say... these feelerstalks aren't very nimble...
[sarcasm]
That is not Broken! All you have to do is open up the file you want to see using a different program, and then open it with QuickTime! DUH!! If you're too lazy to do that, then you are Broken!
[/sarcasm]
BTW, thanks for the advice, furd burfel and shesnailie @ V.
Hey furd, I just can't resist pointing out that your "new all-time favorite Windows error message" actually comes from software produced by ... Apple.
Another broken thing about QT is that by default, it modifies your registry to load some bizarre little program (qtloader.exe I think it's called) every time you start your system. It does this without asking permission or even notifying you that it's doing this, and if you discover it and remove it from the registry, it puts it back the next time QT loads! As far as I can tell, all this program does is keep QT ready in the background -- which saves maybe half a microsecond load time on most modern machines. And since I'll watch maybe one or two QT files in a month, it's particularly useless for me.
I discovered this qtloader thing when my system started hanging on bootup about every third or fourth restart. I had to jump through hoops to stop the damn thing from loading, but once I did, my hang problems ceased.
Thanks a lot, Apple, for trying to force this useless, malicious program on me without my knowledge -- and then trying to con me into paying for an upgrade!
Eoow. Perhaps it means that the file could not be opened due to corruption? I don't know. Definitely broken though. That's why I don't use quicktime, If I have to, I try to go through iTunes when possible. And nomatter what my settings are, WMP always retags my mp3s to really crazy stuff (Imagine your Green Day albums being listed as Billy and the doo-wop chihuahuas). So I use Winamp 5, wxMusik, or fooBar2000 depending on my mood.
Apparently the Mac/Windows thing goes waaaay beyond the OS and hardware. See, I CAN'T STAND Windows media (on Mac OR PC) because it doesn't stream for beans (even on broadband), the video quality sucks, and it takes forever to launch.
I LOVE QuickTime because it launches quickly (albeit to that annoying 'upgrade' banner--Hey APPLE, make the upgrade free and pound Windows Media into the ground already!), streams flawlessly, and has MUCH better video quality. Windows Media may be much better on PC than Mac, but QuickTime is better than Windows Media on the PC AND Mac.
That said, is it really a big surprise that Apple software works better on an Apple and Windows software works better on Windows?
As for a favorite Windows error message coming from Apple software, my favorite is still "There is not enough disk space to delete your files" message {see http://www.goodexperience.com/broken/i/03/09/delete.s.jpg } That one is pure classic Windows.

Easier said than done. QT Pro contains codecs that Apple has to pay for. It could get expensive giving them away.
A message that pops up from time to time when I am opening a file with QT states: No downloads are needed to run this file. I have to click ok then the video runs.
Could it be saying that the file is in use by another application, and so QuickTime can not open it. It sure would be nice if it said that though. Broken.
cant you just install the quicktime codec and play all the quicktime video files through your other favorite player?
do a quick google search for "quicktime alternative" and youll find plenty of places to get a free download.
youll never have to use the quicktime player!
wow thats great !!!!! this rocks i wana download quick time now and try to get that eror yes to the apple main site !!!!!!
