Broken: Customer service in...

From a recent Guardian article:

"Most customers' complaints revolved around the absence of a hospitable welcome, the unacceptable wait for an order to be taken (or for the drink to arrive), the near-impossibility of attracting a waiter's attention, staff's ignorance of the products they were selling, and poor hygiene."

...Other than that, the customer experience was great!

What is the article talking about? Cafes in France.

Comments:

I expect judging by the pathetic standards of customer service generally over here, he was talking about the UK.

I have noticed that customers service is pretty poor everywhere I go.

I was just at a Denny's where the server didn't even come to the table to ask us what we wanted to drink, he just bellowed from the drink station. He did come to the table to deliver the drinks and take our orders, but that was the last we saw of him. Our meal was delivered by an entirely different person, and while that was hardly unusual, that is the last service we received until we had to flag down another server to get the ticket some 5-10 minutes after completing our meal. After nervously asking if we would like refills on our drinks, which at this point was a moot issue, he went to the register, apparently confused, and had a discussion with a manager, probably about who was supposed to be handling our table, before bringing the ticket.

The person at the register gave me an odd look after reading “No Service = No Tip” that I had written in the tip section of the ticket, and all he had to say was, “He went on break.”

You really gave me a lot of laughs when you complained about waiting a mere 5-10 minutes for your bill. Here in Germany, I sometimes wait more than 20 minutes for the bill. The service is just like in France: rude in comparison to US standards. This could be because waiters here receive a full salary plus a very, very small tip, whereas waiters in the US sometimes receive half of minimum wage plus 10-15% tip. In other words, the waiter becomes lazy if he/she will be paid regardless of performance.

I went to Dennys in North Kansas City Mo, 1400 Burlington, and was treated like an outcast. We had been drinking and we did come from the bar but that is still no reason to have to stand and be ignored for thirty minutes. We finally seated ourselves. There were two of us, Me and my wife. They would not give us service till we made the comment where all could hear us that if we were black or oriental we would have gotten seated. The reason we made that exact comment was that two groups of orientals had come in and they seated them and had already gotten their orders and a black couple was seated behing us and they already had their orders. A waitress asked, "is no one waiting on you"? She then came over after an hour total from the time we came in till the time she took our order. It then took another 45 minutes to get our food. A total of an hour and forty five minutes. We told her that we hoped your not going to charge us for the order since it took us such a long time to get service and the coffee was full of grounds to where it was undrinkable. She yelled and cused us out and told us this was not her section and went to get the manager. This action angered us to where we dumped the coffee with grounds on the plates and left. We left because the waitress had no right to cuss us out after 45 minutes of waiting.

This occurred Sunday Morning, July 17, 2005. We entered the resteraunt around 1am and left at 2:45 am. How we know how long it took was because I set the timmer on my pager when they started ignoring us and refusing to seat us by seating others around us. The guy who was suppose to wait on us instead was putting the menus back and ignoring the customers.

This is the Dennys at 1400 Burlington, North Kansas City, Missouri.

That is where we usually go after we have been out. This was our wedding anniversary and this just ruined it. After going there for 16 years and having great service no matter if we had been out drinking or just out with the family or friends we always went there to get something to eat. Infact my girlfriend and I was there just a few days ago and had fair but not great service. We noticed that day the the service was going down hill.
