Broken: Library sign
A friend of mine took this picture in the Bethel Public Library in Bethel, CT. I'd love to say something more about it, but, hey there's nothing much more to say.
That's gotta be doctored. Nobody is that stupid. And even if they were, the first parent coming through there would alert library staff.
Unless its meant to be a convenience?...
"Go read your book in the chilren's room, mommy and daddy will be right here."
I'm guessing that "adult videos" is being used in a different sense here... there are movies to rent, but even though they're in the children's rooms, they're not kids' movies... thus "adult".
I took this picture, and I can assure you that it's real. It's been up for a couple months, and nobody's complained. I went into that room, and didn't see any videos, the movies that are for rent are in another room completely.
It's another case where the creators of the sign are using internal terminology that isn't in synch the intended audiences' terminology.
I agree with Loren. I was at the Buffalo Public Library a while ago and saw a similar sign about Adult Books. They are merely books meant for adults, not pornography. But I admit, the sign does look a bit funny..
I work in a library automation software company. I can assure you that when a librarian says "adult videos" or any other "adult" form of media, they mean not juvenile. Though I did have a customer who, when setting up his database, specifically requested to have the word "Adult" removed and replaced with something else (though I can't remember what alternative he chose at this point).
But that doesn't make this sign any less funny!
Odd that the videos aren't even in the room though. But I've been working here for nearly 3 years and still haven't figured out librarians. They're a special breed, that's for sure.
The sign doesn't say that the adult videos are in the children's room. It just indicates that they're both to the left.
Did this friend point out that this library is in the middle of a huge renovation and is probably shelving adult materials with children's because they're in a tiny temporary space? I honestly don't think the average person would take it to mean pornography.
oh the mishaps that might have happened here. the phrase "mommy what is that man sticking into that lady?" or "what are those to ladies opening their lags for?" oh... that would be quite the story time, and the man and the lady lived happily ever after screwin them selves all the way home.

Wait. This library has adult videos? Seriously?
