Broken: Cell phone designs
The display on my Verizon Audiovox-CDM8600 cell phone alternates between "Verizon Wireless" and the current time every 4 seconds; sometimes forcing me to wait 4 seconds just to know what time it is.Also see, The truth about all of those fancy, feature-packed cell phones, by Scott Kirsner. When the phone is charging, the display alternates between "Charging..." and "Verizon Wireless." I have to open the phone and look at the internal LCD to see the time.
When the phone is "searching for service...," the time is not displayed on the external nor the internal LCD. But the phone knows what time it is, because when you set an alarm, the default alarm time is the current time. So, when the phone is "searching for service...," I need to set an alarm to find out what time it is.
Info on killing the banner for the CDM8900.
I don't know if there's something similar for the CDM8600.

Hi - I originally submitted this post. I did eventually kill the banner on the 8600 in a manner similar to the 8900 - but there is still a problem during incoming calls.
During an incoming call, the caller's phone number is displayed for 4 seconds, and then a blank screen is displayed for 4 seconds. The blank screen is where it used to say "verizon wireless" Makes it a pain to see who is calling.
And the searching for service thing isn't killed when the banner is killed. The whole thing is just a pain
Hey Adam,
I've got the same phone and same concerns! You're on the right track. I agree, sadly, there's no totally good solution. Great phone but what were the designers thinking with the time feature?!
Doh! Why does it display "Verizon Wireless" every 4 seconds anyway? It's not like you're going to forget who your wireless carrier is.
Adam: Get a new phone! If your model is that old that it doesn't display the time, that's a signal to switch to a newer model.
hey smart one! that phone is new- its one of them rotate-to-open phones with the blue screen and blue keypad
Why should he buy a new phone? I have a Motorola V60, with mono ring tones and a monochrome screen. Guess what... it still makes phone calls! I don't need to play Tomb Raider, e-mail, and schedule appointments with my phone, and I certainly don't feel like two hundred bucks in order to do so
Here's some info for ya :)
You can disable the swiching of the phone from "verizon wireless" to the time. My phone did the same thing when I first got it and I thought it sucked but then I fiddled around and found out it could be disabled. It sucked for about 2 days until I finally sat down and messed around with the phone. Good luck and No you don't need a new phone :)
hey! omg i had that phone for 2 months (8600) that was the best phone i ever owned! i now use a v60i i love it! it looks smart and sophistocated! as for the verizon problm, well i was with bel mobility and the phone dident say anyhting about bell on it lol, we dont need a banner to feel good about ourselfs, i dunno this is pointless i know meh
good luck
-Cheers
