Broken: Playground sign

Dianna Ott writes:

What am I supposed to do, now that I know that there's a playground for the next 4,350 feet?
This unit of measurement is beyond my comprehension while I am
driving at 35 mph.

Comments:

It would be so much clearer if it read "Next 0.824 mi."

"Next 1.5 km" would be rounder, but the chances of that sign appearing somewhere in the US anytime soon are, sadly, slim to none.

Do you not use yards in the USA? 1450 yards may be a better choice ...

I'll go with Michael on the miles, it would probably have worked best.

You have apparently never been on I-19. This little known Interstate Highway not only fails to meet the definition of interstate by only existing in Arizona between Tucson and the Mexican border town of Nogalas, but was built entirely with metric signage.

that's certainly an enormous see-saw

World's longest playground?

The odometers in most cars sold in the USA have increments down to the tenths of a mile. Instead of putting foot measurements on a sign, the distance in tenths of a mile to the indicated object should be used instead. I can easily look at my odometer and figure out how far to the object. Converting the feet to miles however requires math, and attention off the road

i'd just round it up to 1 mile

We do use yards in the U.S., but typically not for road signs.

It doesn't need math. You just think, "4350 feet is a bit less than 1 mile."
