Just in time for the holidays, I've published a new free report for you to download to assist with your technology purchases and other gifts - or to send to friends who need that assistance.

It's called Uncle Mark 2004 Gift Guide and Almanac.

Download it for free here.

(If it's too slow there, I have set up this temporary alternate location.)

The gift guide in Uncle Mark is a compilation of all my answers to all the questions I get from friends and family about technology. In the Almanac section I've added a couple of tips and rants about things that no one asked me about, but that I thought might be helpful or at least entertaining.

For example, in the digital camera section, I tell the reader which digital camera to buy. Not which 10 models to consider, with ratings and trade-offs, but which *one* camera to buy, and why. On the shopping page at http://www.unclemark.org , I post the price and a link to buy the camera immediately.

Here's the table of contents of Uncle Mark 2004:

- Introduction

GIFT GUIDE:
- Digital camera
- Video game system
- Personal computer
- MP3 player
- Three board games you should know about
- Two inexpensive gifts for kids

ALMANAC:
- An old movie you probably haven't seen
- Rules for walking in New York City
- Umbrella storage system
- Buy a permanent calling card
- How to leave a telephone message

- Keep in touch

The idea for Uncle Mark came about when a middle-aged couple asked me a few months ago what graduation gift they should buy for their nephew. They knew me as someone who "knows about computers," so could I make a suggestion? Immediately I told them the answer: "Buy him an Apple iPod." They did, the nephew loved it (of course), and they came off looking like in-the-know tech heroes.

It made me think: there are people out there who don't have the time or interest in reading all the magazines and websites with the latest product comparisons. That's why they ask their trusted advisor to just give them the answer - usually a friend or family member (perhaps an uncle!) who "knows about computers."

So I thought, why not give away all my Uncle Mark answers for free, for anyone who might find them helpful? For example, why should someone have to spend months researching which digital camera to buy, when I'm happy to point someone to the one camera they should buy? Uncle Mark readers get the answers directly from a experienced source, without having to pore over product comparisons, reviews, articles, or brochures.

Consider it my holiday gift to the Good Experience readership, and to all the friends you'll send it to. If you feel like gifting right back, here are three ways you can help:

HOW TO HELP:

1. Tell a friend about the guide. You can do that here.

2. Send me a few bucks for my efforts on the "donate" page at UncleMark.org.

3. Buy a product on the shopping page at UncleMark.org. (I get a referral fee for most of the products in the guide.)

I hope you and your friends and family find the guide helpful.
