How to Make Friends by Telephone: scanned 1940s-era guide. Especially for next year's Uncle Mark, in the phone-tips section, I really need to remember: use a normal tone of voice, rather than saying glub-glub mo-blon.

I couldn't believe that they had quantified the effectiveness of how you hold the phone! But there was one kernel of truth in this "delightful and charming" blast from the past: there is nothing sweeter to a person than hearing his or her own name. So true. I suppose that it conveys that you remember, and ultimately that you care.
Thank you for reminding us that telephones were once a new technology that required detailed instructions! - Stephanie
