Recommended iPhone apps: travel and a game

From the NYT, recommended iPhone apps for travelers.

For anyone interested in games, I highly recommend Galcon, an outstanding multiplayer game for the iPhone. (There's a PC/Mac version as well, but I actually prefer the iPhone version.) In rounds lasting a minute or so, you try to take over other players' territory while defending your own. The gameplay is perfectly tuned for the iPhone touch interface, and the Net connection - playing against iPhone users across the world - is seamless. Well worth the $10 price.

I've had my iPhone 3G for over a month now. While on the one hand I can say without equivocation that it is the coolest device I've ever owned, on the other hand, it is about the most useless. Between the constant dropped calls, lack of reception, and almost consistent inability to check emails when outside a WiFi network, I can't even begin to imagine downloading applications from anywhere outdoors.

Before we all get overly excited about the extendibility of the iPhone via third-party apps, it's critical that Apple and/or AT&T address these basic issues of functionality.
