On stage design at events

Today's NYT analyzes the sets at the political conventions: the Democrats' set is "what you would see in a big musical"; the Republicans' simple stage shows that McCain is "straightforward."

Stage design matters. The physical environment of any event carries an important message, no matter what is actually said on stage. This is why I've always avoided holding the Gel conference in a hotel ballroom, like many other events - a hotel ballroom says "get ready for more of the same," while a beautifully built theater says "this is going to be special."

Would you rather experience a conference here...

...or here?

(That's the TimesCenter, where Gel is held.)
