Brilliant comparison of the iPhone 3G's TV commercial - look how fast and smooth it looks on camera - versus the same actions in the real world.

The person who made the video writes, "I like Apple products, but I dislike being misled by deceptive advertising more."

Its funny how in-built scepticism wears out after a while and you become de-sensitised to reality, and ride the hype wave.

This was a brilliant idea and a stark way to illustrate reality. Great stuff.

A very good comparison - bravo.

To play the apologist: at least the features presented can be used in the manner presented. Compare that with other phone/pda devices....? Ever tried to surf the web on a blackberry, or used a nokia contact system, looked at photos on a Palm?

Yes, the speed is not as advertised; but still far better than the competition.

Great video. We need much more of this.

But yes, I totally agree with typhoonandrew. I went into the store to shop for Blackberry's and they couldn't get even to get it to go on the Web IN THE STORE (!). Currently, the iPhone is the only smartphone that can truly access the web (not a pre-selected set of sites) in the US. Where Apple is shamelessly exaggerating, everyone else is just lying. Maybe the Gphone will open the US market to some real competition?

I'm falling out of love with the iPhone right now. And I still have 17 months to go on my contract :(

The reason is the Blackberry Bold. It has a brighter screen, much much better speakers, a better keyboard, and much much better battery life. The only think I don't know about is if the Bold allows calling cards, which is what's really killing me with the iPhone.

In the context of this article, it's fast enough for me. What would you do if you were the marketer who had 30 seconds to sell the iPhone's features?

That's flatly not true. WM accesses the same internet via at least three or four different browsers and if you like you can alter the registry to report your browser as a full version of IE.

Apple's iPhone commercials are neither "doctored" nor all that deceptive. They merely choose to demonstrate the use of the device in its best-performing mode: WiFi. You can do all the things it shows being done, and at the speed shown, you just can't do it on a rooftop "across the street from the Apple store" with nothing but a cellular -- even G3 -- connection. Only the technically illiterate consumer would expect to see the phone's best performance from the cellular network rather than from a Wi-Fi connection to a broadband network at home or at work. And with all the advertising any modern adult has seen, who would be surprised (or deceived) that Apple shows the product running at its fastest speed?

When you see luxury sports car commercials, do you buy the thing believing that all the roads will be empty, every day will be sunny, speed limits are optional and all your passengers will be blond?
