On packaging vs. substance

I spotted this sign last weekend:

Leave the package packed

The sign has nice color, typography, font, layout, and so on... at first glance it seems like a regular sign. But the content makes absolutely no sense. This is a pattern: lots of things in the world are packaged well, with no substance inside.

Good packaging can take something really far, regardless of what lies inside. It takes time for the recipient to distinguish what's for real, because substance is different from the packaging (or wrapper, cover, box, teaser, promo, or trailer).

Bad Engrish maybe, but it's a simple instruction to leave the door packaged until you get the fridge where it's supposed to go first, then unpackage and install the door. The content has no context because everything is put together, the sign needs to be peeled off and thrown away.
