Does the iPhone trump the Kindle for reading digital text? I'd say "it depends." The Kindle is better for the focused, page-by-page reading of a book. The iPhone is better for the quick, hyperactive reading of blogs and other multimedia websites.

I just finished reading Lush Life on the Kindle - great book, by the way. I wouldn't have wanted to read the whole thing on the iPhone's small screen.

Conversely, earlier today I read Boing Boing on the iPhone. I definitely wouldn't have wanted to read that on the Kindle, which charges $2 per month to read a blog (??) and whose interface isn't built for Web browsing.

I have an iTouch.

I have heard that viewing text on the kindle is much less straining on the eyes, because there is no backlight, less range of colors, etc.

However, I literally spend hours reading websites on my iTouch, and I don't find much fatigue. This is mainly due to the awesome UI, in my opinion

Hah, I read books on my iPhone with no issues, and I actually prefer it to the kindle for a lot of reasons, especially some that you outline above. (I have a jailbroken phone with iphoneebooks)

I'm just hoping that if there is a ebook reader for sale in the app store in july, they or apple might consider also selling ebooks, because i'm getting a bit tired of ;)

I had a Kindle for a few weeks but found that the lack of social tools, the flunky interface, and the lack of RSS reading really killed it for me. I'm not a big book reader, so I think I'm a case for being a reader on the iPhone. The Kindle is nice for it's paper-like screen but it didn't fit my reading style.

No way! It's all about readability. Portable devices are great, but who wants to stare at a mini screen when we stare at screens all day long in this digital age?! Kindle may need some improvements, but it is an outstanding product, and wins hands down against the iPhone if you want a great reading experience!

I used to read on an eBookMan, but have since switched to reading on my Treo. I was initially concerned with the smaller size of the screen, but the sharpness of the screen makes up for it.

The most important issue with having my eBooks on the Treo is that it is always with me. If I have a few spare minutes while waiting in line, I can always read a few pages.

Mark made this point in his last gift-giving guide when he suggested the best camera is the one you always have with you (iPhone).
