Broken: V8's "100% juice" claim
Oct 1, 2007
From the This Is Broken group on Flickr, sdigroup2001 shows us this part of a V8 label:
"100% vegetable juice... with added ingredients."
That's not really 100% vegetable juice, then, is it?

I think the "from concentrate" is the key there; it probably satisfies the FDA requirements for labeling it as 100% whatever, because they probably added additional stuff while reconstituting it. Using apple juice instead of water, for example.
The juice is 100% vegetable, the added ingredients not ;)
wow, a juice with more than 100% contents.
The FDA is really weird about how food items can be labeled "100%" or "0". For example, Splenda, the no calorie sweetener, actually has 4 calories per serving. But by FDA standards, if you have under 5 calories per serving, you can claim that you have zero calories.
I don't really get how it works, and I'm sure there are plenty of other examples out there. The general rule of thumb is read all your nutrition labels, not just the bold claims on the front of the box :)
